Under the Stars War – a look back

We can’t believe it’s almost five months since our Thursday Drama Group performed Under the Stars War at the Crucible Theatre! In this retrospective blog, we take a look back at the production and revisit the experience by catching up with director Lauren Partridge, drama practitioner David Lumley, and some of the cast to reflect on the process and hear more about how the piece came together.

Tell us a bit about the rehearsal period for Under the Stars War

Lauren: We started the process by finding space themed songs and choreographing dances to them which was great fun. One of the main influences that came out was the Stars War theme and also the prologue from Romeo and Juliet and from that came the story of Under the Stars War – so basically Romeo and Juliet set in space! Two warring factions that fall in love – without the poison and death at the end!

David: Yeah, as a group we thought of as many big sci-fi moments from films and TV shows and thought about how we could weave these into the show.

Lauren: and something we wanted to do was have the last line as ‘I am your father’ so we worked backwards from there to piece together a story that would reveal who the father was, whilst fitting in lots of memorable and iconic sci-fi references. There was a lot of chatting and devising as a group. We started with the dances, then started to create scenes, then added songs which the group customised with their own lyrics to fit the storyline. David then recorded and mixed these which was a great experience for everyone and something we’ve not done before.

Were there any surprising moments during this process?

Lauren: Yes! Everyone’s rapping ability was something that was really cool. It was amazing. We hadn’t done any before and they were brilliant at that type of speak singing.

What were your proudest moments?

David: I was so impressed by how everyone was so cool and calm. As staff, we were flapping backstage, whereas for the actors, it was just like another day in the office! Everyone fulfilled their potential and went beyond that. All of the actors remembered everything and although there’s always worries on the run up to a show, they pulled it out of the bag. In rehearsals, people could get frustrated when something went wrong but they overcame this and were so supportive with one another.

Lauren: Yeah, I think for me it was seeing everything come together – the projections, the dances, people laughing and understanding it. I’d thought ‘will people get it?’ and they did. They laughed at all the right moments and really enjoyed it. It was a fun production with lots in it and bringing it all together was no mean feat.

What challenges did you face along the way?

Lauren: There was lots to remember for our actors – their lines, the dances and positioning for all the entrances, exits and scenes. There were moments where people were thinking ‘where am I supposed to be for this dance!?’ but it all pulled together. We only had a day in the theatre before our first performance that evening, so everyone did brilliantly.

David: The costume changes were challenging but it all worked out thankfully!

What would you say to someone with disabilities who is thinking about doing drama?

Lauren: I’d say - you can do it! Anything is possible – the sky’s the limit! You can make a story from anything; we showed that with our mash up of Star Wars and Romeo and Juliet. For me, it’s also understanding the barriers that disabled actors may face and working with this. There shouldn’t be any barriers - so, I adjust by saying things like ‘Can you move here – rather than can you walk here’.

David: Groundbreaking, innovative, fun

Lauren: Hilarious, imaginative ….and…did you say 3 words? Out of this world!

Izzy Harper

What character did you play Izzy?

I played the part of Rhea – the leader of the Saturnites. Their job was to take over the earth, but she doesn’t want to. She kind of wants a war but doesn’t want too much drama.

What was it like being in Under the Stars War?

It was so good. I got to let some of my acting skills out - that I’d kept hidden for so many years. I finally got to let them out and got to show people the real me.

How did that feel?

I felt really proud. Really awesome. Performing the show was amazing. It was wicked! At the end I felt fantastic. Seeing my family smile and being so proud of me and knowing that everyone loved it and how famous I’d become – that felt brilliant.

What would you say to someone with a disability who is thinking of getting into acting?

I would say – just go out there and do it. Be yourself – you’ve got this. Go out there and show people what you’re made of.

How would you describe Under the Stars War in three words?

Amazing, Fantastic and wicked!

Jack:

What was the process of creating Under the Stars War?

We all came up with a Star Wars, sci-fi style show. We got bits together using everyone’s ideas and then put it into one big show.

What was the best thing about your experience of being in the show?

I enjoyed the rehearsals and coming up with lots of the ideas. I also liked doing the dances a lot.

What was your proudest moment?

It was doing the Neil Armstrong speech. I felt really good and I had to do an American accent. It was great. I also thought our group worked very well as a team.

What have you learnt from being in Under the Stars War?

I’ve learnt how to do different accents and also got to be a better dancer.

Describe Under the Stars War in three words:

Funny, intriguing and amazing

Xera and Lewis:

What parts did you play?

Xera: I played Luna who lives in space. She falls in love with Titan, who was played by Lewis.

What was your favourite moment?

Xera: I liked saying all of my lines and also hugging Lewis. My best bit was saying ‘What? Are you going to fart?’ everyone laughed, especially my mum.

Lewis: We thought we were going to laugh when Xera said that line, but we were professional and didn’t.

Xera: Yeah, it was really fun. I also liked singing in front of an audience – that was great. It was funny hearing my voice over the speakers and seeing people on the big screen.

Lewis: It felt amazing performing in the Crucible. It felt like we were starring in a bigger space – a lot bigger than we had thought.

Were there any challenges?

Xera: It was really hard work getting everything together, but we worked as a team. I felt nervous when I got to The Crucible, but I didn’t feel nervous by the end of it. Everyone really supported me.

Lewis: I really liked being the spaceship, but it was hard to see through it though! That was the only bit that was hard. Even Anne [the producer] tested it and said it was a bit hard to see through it! It was a bit blurry. It looked amazing though.

What would you give Under the Star Wars out of ten?

Xera: 10 out of 10

Lewis: For me it was 100 out of 10!

Last month our Monday and Wednesday Drama groups presented their incredible production of ‘Folktales Reincarnated’ – an immersive experience blending live theatre and film. The event was three years in the making and proved to be a smash hit!

Drawing on 1970s folk horror, African folklore, early gothic cinema, and physical theatre, the production shared a world where stories are passed on, transformed, and reborn.

We caught up with some of the creative team and actors to find out more…

Steve Givnan, director and lead facilitator described the process of creating the show:

This is the first production the Monday and Wednesday drama groups have shared for some time. At Under the Stars, the process of devising and rehearsal is as important as the final performance. Along the way, we have seen people grow in confidence, discover new skills and take creative risks together.

We began by asking both groups what stories and themes they were drawn to. There was a strong interest in fairy tales and folk stories, alongside a fascination with darker, more unsettling material. We explored how these traditions overlap - experimenting with genre, movement, atmosphere and forms of storytelling that were new to us.

Folktales Reincarnated reflects our shared belief that stories do not stay fixed in the past. They are reborn through new perspectives, shaped by the people who tell them. While not directly about disability, these works are informed by the lived experience, creativity and imagination of disabled and neurodivergent artists, quietly woven into the fabric of the storytelling.

It has been a joy to make this work together and hope that audiences were left carrying something new - a thought, an image, or a piece of wisdom - to share with others.

We also had the opportunity to speak with some of the cast, all of whom loved the experience of devising and performing in the production.

Sheridan shared how much she loved stepping into her character, describing the role as making her feel confident and excited. She especially enjoyed wearing her light up costume, which helped bring the character to life. She went on to say 'It was nice doing the dancing. Before it I felt quite nervous and shy but once we started I felt, happy and confident. I would like to do it again. It made me feel amazing' On stage, Sheridan captivated audiences with her striking physicality and vivid characterisation, fully immersed in her performance.

Jack talked about how great the whole process has been 'It all came together by thinking about folktales over a two year period. It's a load of stories which we connected together. I loved how everyone had great imagination and everyone had so much inspiration. I had loads of ideas.' Jack particularly liked the fact that they moved around and were close to the audience. He described the show as 'mystical, exciting and unique'

Ken took on his role as Shikondo with remarkable intensity, delivering a powerful performance that left a lasting impression. Ken really enjoyed playing a baddie although he mentioned that his costume was very warm! He spoke enthusiastically about his love of acting and his experience in the production, encouraging others to get involved with Under the Stars. In his own words Ken said 'I felt brilliant after because I like acting and performing.'

Nick described how much he enjoyed and performing in Folktales Reincarnated. He described how his favourite moment was playing the guitar. He also mentioned how much he liked his costumes. All in all, Nick felt that 'it was a great performance and all the performers did a brilliant job'

Leanna described how much she enjoyed playing the Mushroom Goddess and particularly liked her costume, make up and hair. She felt excited when performing and being part of something that everyone enjoyed.

Huge thanks to our amazing production team - Debby for her outstanding work on costumes, sets, and props; David for the stunning lighting design; Rachel for her fantastic input both on and off stage and Anne, our drama project manager, for overseeing the project and ensuring everything ran smoothly. Extra thanks also go to our volunteers, both on and off stage.

Next Thursday, the dance floor comes alive again as Under the Stars nightclub reopens at a brand-new venue: The Foundry at Sheffield University. On Thursday 23rd October from 7pm–10pm, we’re bringing the party to a fresh space, and we can’t wait to see you there!

Our club is designed specifically for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism, along with their friends and supporters. It’s a space where everyone can feel free, celebrated, and totally themselves—and trust us, our clubbers know how to party.

Over 20 DJs, One Unforgettable Night

Expect brilliant vibes from our DJ squads—more than 20 DJs will be spinning tunes throughout the night covering a range of genres from dance anthems to classic rock. Every one of our DJs has trained in our music workshops at Under the Stars, where creativity, confidence, and connection take centre stage.

One DJ we’re especially excited about is newcomer Chrissie, aka DJ Miiaaooww. After a sizzling debut at Tramlines Fringe in July, this will be her first nightclub performance……and she’s ready to bring the house down.

Chrissie said “My DJ name is DJ Miiaaooww because I’m really mad about cats and it sounds good,” Chrissie told us. “I’m a bit nervous about the nightclub, but the Tramlines set was brilliant so I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

Her set promises a mix of classic feel-good tunes like Hear Me Tonight and Move Your Feet, with a possible nod to her feline fandom via a Pussycat Dolls track. As Chrissie puts it, “I was born in 1993, so this is my era!”

Chrissie’s goal is simple: to make clubbers feel happy and free.

“I know not everyone will love the songs I choose, but I want them to dance how they want to dance. I want them to feel free!”

When asked what makes a great DJ, Chrissie said it’s all about enthusiasm, great songs, and connecting with the crowd. She’s even planning a shout-out to fellow cat lovers:

“I want to shout out—Have we got any cat lovers out there? I say ‘Me’, you say ‘Yow’—I think that could be fun!”

Chrissie is dedicating her set to her dad, honouring their shared love of music (even if their tastes didn’t always match). She also sends heartfelt thanks to her fellow Sparkle Sistaz, Under the Stars, and all the clubbers for coming along.

Devonshire Green was positively glowing on Sunday 27th July, and it wasn’t due to sunshine! The Sparkle Sistaz lit up the Tramlines Fringe stage with a fierce and fabulous  DJ set that was full of joy!

From the first beat of “Born This Way” to the final chorus of “Hot Hot Hot,” the Sistaz served up a summer soundtrack that spanned decades and genres, all with their signature sparkle. Whether you were an S Club 7 fan or a Madonna devotee, there was something for everyone—and every track came with a side of sass, smiles, and sensational moves.

This year’s performance wasn’t just a party—it was a celebration of growth, confidence, and pure star quality.

Notable moments that really demonstrated how hard the group have worked this year:

• Alice is clearly 'over' her fear of heights, and she danced onto that stage like she owned it—because she did. She was unstoppable. We’re still cheering!
• Kathryn, one of our most experienced DJs, didn’t just rock her own set—she ran the whole show. With Moony ready in the wings if needed, Kathryn took the reins and kept things flowing like a pro.
• And let’s talk about Billie and Beckz, our support staff who couldn’t resist busting out some moves themselves. Nice work ladies!

At Under the Stars, we believe in the power of creativity to uplift, empower, and connect. The Sparkle Sistaz don’t just play music, they make magic. They challenge expectations, celebrate individuality, and show the world what it means to be truly seen and heard for who you are.

We may not have had the Lord Mayor at our show this year, but the Fringe staff still made us feel like royalty. Their support, warmth, and enthusiasm reminded us why The Tramlines Fringe is one of our favourite places to shine.

To everyone who cheered, danced, and partied with us, thank you. The Sparkle Sistaz will be back, brighter than ever next year.

At Under the Stars, we empower our artists to express their ideas through music, drama, and dance. But even our most passionate and talented artists need a break. It was during one of these breaks that the Crochet Club first began.

In 2024, Sophia, a member of our all-female ensemble, the Sparkle Sistaz, brought along a project she was working on, marking the first stitch at Under the Stars.

Sophia had been learning to crochet with one of her support workers at home. When her support worker left, she had no one to teach her and really missed it. She mentioned this to Julia, one of our managers, who is also an avid crocheter. Julia suggested that if Sophia brought in her project, she’d give her some help during the Sparkle Sistaz lunch break.

The next Thursday, Julia brought her hooks and a big bag of yarn and spent lunchtime sitting with Sophia and the other interested members of the Sparkle Sistaz keen to have a go. Katie had done a bit of crochet already, and Kathryn was eager to try.

Before long, that single stitch had become a chain, and the Crochet Club became a regular Thursday lunchtime activity.

“Our Sparkle Sistaz are just so creative and imaginative that it’s not really a surprise they found a way to bring something extra to their time at Under the Stars,” Julia adds. “They even take their crochet to their other day services now!  It’s such a great way to be mindful and get a bit of peace on a busy day."

The club members have produced scarves, bags, granny squares, and blankets galore since they started learning.

“I’m working on finishing a bag,” says Sophia. “I’m just doing the handle now. I’ve made a bumblebee teddy before, but my sister stole it off me!” That her creations are so covetable speaks to how accomplished these crocheters have become over the space of 12 months.

“I’m making a baby blanket,” says Kathryn with a big smile. “My brother’s partner is having a baby soon, a little girl. And I’m also making a hat for my mum, to match the scarf I made for her last year.”

This is a brilliant side effect of being part of a creative community. The Sparkle Sistaz have always been a colourful bunch of characters, but they get more colourful every week with their beautiful crochet creations.

Under the Stars is certainly not known for its yarncraft, but the Crochet Club has really added value to our artists experience at Under the Stars.

Casting a nostalgic eye over the past year, it’s been interesting to see if people remembered the same events in the same way. Take Dave from Aspire Community Enterprise and our CEO Ruth Parrott.

Dave: ‘When I first contacted Ruth about Under the Stars being nominated as our Charity of the Year, she said “no thanks, we only use Macs.”’

Ruth: ‘When Aspire rang me to say we’d been nominated to be their Charity of the Year I said, “no thanks, we only use Macs.”’

How lovely that they both have the same memory of the call! Despite this rocky start, our relationship with Aspire has gone on to be a bit of a love affair, and Dave can laugh about the unsettled beginning now.

‘I just think Ruth thought we were trying to give her old bits of IT hardware, which we absolutely were not,’ he says.

In fact, Aspire’s support has helped our Music workshop staff and participants realise a long-held ambition…

But let’s rewind, back to the start for Aspire. They started out in 2001, with a mission that remains just as strong today:

“..we firmly believe in the power of community and the collective impact we can make when we come together to support one another. Through our initiatives aimed at reducing waste and helping individuals thrive, we strive to be a beacon of hope and opportunity in the local community. By fostering a culture of inclusivity, empowerment, and sustainability, we aim to create a brighter future for all. Aspire Community Enterprise (Sheffield) Ltd remains steadfast in our commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others while championing environmental stewardship and social responsibility.”

So, it’s not all about computers then?

‘No, it’s all about people, and opportunities,’ says Dave. Aspire’s workforce truly reflects its ethos. Many people who are involved wouldn’t find it easy to access traditional employment, but with Aspire they build vital 21^st century skills as well as boost their confidence.

‘We used to get lots of requests for help from different charities and community groups from all over the country. And it took a long time to sift through all the requests and work out the genuine need. So, a couple of years ago one of our Trustees suggested that a more effective way of making sure we helped groups whose work fitted with our mission would be to choose a Charity of the Year.’

The first organisation was Ben’s Centre, a Sheffield based charity that aims to provide a safe space and an open hand to those who are disadvantaged through substance misuse and its associated barriers. As their year came to an end, they were asked to nominate another local charity and chose Under the Stars.

‘It made perfect sense, and I’m surprised we hadn’t thought of Under the Stars before. A couple of people who come and gain skills here are also involved with Under the Stars workshops, so we already knew of the great work going on.’

To give even more context to Ruth’s initial rejection, Under the Stars often receive phone calls from people offering old bits of sub-standard musical equipment, or ‘the monthly organ’ as Ruth calls it, and some people don’t understand when we have to reject their kind donations.

‘We don’t have lots of space to keep spare instruments and kit, so sometimes even brilliant stuff might get turned down. We’re also insistent that our participants get access to industry standard equipment, not just making do, she clarified.

It explains though, the certainty with which her first ‘no’ was delivered to Dave. But with a little bit more talking, Ruth quickly realised that what Aspire was offering was much more meaningful and impactful for Under the Stars as an organisation.

‘We’ve just revamped the offices and taken on a new member of staff, so having Aspire help us get a computer, monitors etc has been brilliant, as that eats up our limited core budget,’ said Ruth.

The biggest opportunity for Under the Stars, however, was being able to work with Dave and his team to get a bespoke computer that could deliver incredible images. And this is something that has been on the Music Workshop wishlist for a long time.

‘Graphics cards of the specification we need to make high quality interactive visuals are not cheap,’ said Jono Richards, one of our Music Workshop Leaders.

‘Having something this powerful means we can integrate sound and visuals, and our participants can produce fantastic images on screen that we can use at events.’ And without the expertise and generosity of Aspire, this just would not be possible.  

And now our year as the beneficiary of expertise and equipment is over, and we have nothing but huge thanks to give to Aspire. The new charity beneficiary for 2025 is Reyt Repair, who do a fantastic job of breathing new life into items destined for the scrapheap, with an aim to ‘reduce waste, save money and bring people together’.

We wish them as successful and rewarding a year as we’ve had. And next time someone offers us the chance to be their Charity of the Year, we will definitely be saying YES!

Back in 2022, after a long and stressful lockdown for many of our learners and staff, Under the Stars nightclub was finally ready to welcome our community back to the dancefloor at The Leadmill. We were so joyous about it that we shouted our return loudly, and people listened! Look North came to film our opening night, and aired the footage on TV the next evening. It was such a positive news story that BBC Breakfast picked it up.

Watching us on that BBC Breakfast show were some staff members from AlphaTheta, the company that owns Pioneer DJ, Rekordbox, and more. They immediately noticed that our DJs were using their innovative DJ products in our workshops and at club nights, and they were very impressed. So impressed, in fact, that they contacted our CEO Ruth and asked if they could come and see us—and their equipment—in action.

AlphaTheta brands their work under the ‘One Through Music’ banner, aiming “to enhance the creative potential of music and enable a world filled with joy.” This aligns brilliantly with our own ethos, so we invited them to one of our club nights at The Leadmill. Anita, head of Legal, and some of her team made the trip North and were blown away by what they saw and heard.

Fast forward to summer 2024, when the AlphaTheta team extended an invitation for a reciprocal visit to their HQ in London. We weren’t going to turn down that opportunity! So on Tuesday, 1st October, six learners and six staff members from Under the Stars headed off for a day of pure DJ indulgence. Here’s what some of our DJs had to say:

Arshad: “It was great. The people were nice and caring. They took us around on a tour. The food was nice, the people were great. We got a cup of tea when we got there. There were lots of studios; we had lunch, then we did stuff on the decks. Goody bags as well—reyt good t-shirts, headphones, notebook, everything. It was absolutely wicked.”

Julia: “Taking our group of six DJs to the AlphaTheta HQ was a treat from start to finish. They worked so hard to give us a memorable day. Nothing was too much trouble, and they made us feel like stars! My highlight was seeing the polaroid of ‘DJ Shaq’ pinned up next to Carl Cox on the AlphaTheta Wall of Fame—exactly where he belongs!”

Anita from AlphaTheta sent this message following our visit: “We thoroughly enjoyed the day, and it’s one we will remember. You are an amazing team with amazing people, and what you do means so very much. You genuinely improve lives and are a true inspiration.”

It goes without saying that we loved visiting the Alphatheta studio. Here’s hoping there will be other opportunities to partner with such a great company in the future!

Sheffield 10k, you were awesome! 

The 2024 Sheffield 10k was our fourth time as an organisation fielding a team of runners and walkers. And what a team! One of our learners Nick made his walking debut, three generations of one family entered to spur each other on, and our drama practitioner Steve fundraised over £1000 to help our work. And the others? Well, they were marvelous too. 

The day started with a team photo in the sunshine outside the Lyceum.  Our smiles attracted the Sheffield Star reporters to come and do a little pre-race interview, which Cathy completely smashed!   A little pre-event number finding chaos meant the race started slightly late, but by the time the throngs of thousands set off up Arundel Gate they quickly got their smiles on, and their adrenaline pumping.   

The support on the course from Sheffielders and beyond was amazing.  Lots of jelly babies and water to take care of our athletes, and believe me some of us needed it! 

The final stretch of the race was the opportunity for our learner Cathy and her dad to join in. As our only wheelchair user, her hot wheels and enthusiasm were welcome boosts to the team effort.  There’s something magic about crossing that line after all that effort. The faces of our runners, walkers and wheelers says it all! A brilliant mixture of pride, happiness, and relief.  

Waiting to meet our running superstars at the finish was Ruth Parrott, our Managing Director. Ruth is a champion cheerleader for the whole team and greeted everyone with a massive smile, a big “well done!” and a few tears! 

 “I am blown away by our incredible team of runners/walkers,” she said. “I am so grateful to everyone who ran on our behalf, and really touched by all the stories and reasons why people wanted to run for Under the Stars.”  

Our runner Alex had this to say:  

"The Sheffield 10k is a truly exhilarating experience and I think everyone should give it go at least once. It doesn't matter what your ability is or what your time is, it's just great to take part in such a huge fundraising event. Most of the runners have their own deeply personal motivations and collectively we're addressing so many causes that are all worthy of support.  

My shoelace came undone near the end and I opted to keep running as I thought my muscles would seize up if I stopped. This was a risky strategy that I don't recommend but I managed to get over the line without falling over! I saw SWFC legend Carlton Palmer at the finish line and grabbed a selfie as a reward.  

I'm very grateful for the Under the Stars staff who organised everything and came out to cheer on the runners. It gives all our team a big boost." 

None of this would have happened without the organisational skills of Julia Waldron, our Development Manager. She’s the prime mover for the event (though we did wonder if it was an elaborate plan to motivate herself back into running after a year out!) and she worked really hard to make sure that everyone was dressed in the Under the Stars t-shirts, places were registered and sponsorship efforts were well supported. And the grand total…a huge £4.5k. Magnificent work all!
