We hope this email finds you well and in good spirits. We wanted to take a moment to fill you in on some of the incredible work that has been happening at Under the Stars over the past few months. With your continued support, we have been able to make a real difference in the lives of many people in our community.
Nightclub
Thanks to all 292 of our amazing clubbers for joining us for our spooky nightclub at The Leadmill in October. We had a great night and appreciate every one of you turning up and making an effort with your brilliant costumes and general snappy dressing! Big thanks to all our DJs and volunteers for bringing the happy vibes to the dancefloor.
Our next nightclub is the one we all look forward to – the Christmas Nightclub on Thursday 7th December. Our DJs are doubling up to bring you double the energy on the dancefloor. We can’t wait to see you in all your glitzy glory. For those that want to jump the queue to get in, online tickets are available to buy here for just £5 per head
Fundraising News!
New Guitars
Huge thanks to Sheffield and District Disabled Association for agreeing to fund two brand new electric guitars for us this week. We are planning to take one of our groups down to Richtone music to try some out before we buy. They love a good music shop visit!
New Camera Equipment
We were delighted to be granted £1000 in October by the Sheffield 1000 charity. The charity aims to get 1000 people donating £1 each week to support local Sheffield charities, good causes, organisations and individuals who need help. This donation will contribute towards buying new camera equipment for our drama groups to learn new skills in film making and acting for camera. We were also successful in securing £3000 towards this important camera equipment from Sheffield Town Trust. Our drama groups are extremely grateful and can’t wait to get cracking with their new film-making projects!
Fundraising STARS
A huge thank you to new Trustee Cath for raising valuable funds for Under the Stars in her birthday Facebook fundraiser. Cath’s friends and family donated over £150 to our charity. Fabulous!
Another of our star Trustees took on a challenge in the summer with his company Taylor Wimpey, and his son Jacob to hike across the Brecon Beacons. Team Taylor Wimpey and Jacob between them raised over £2000 for Under the Stars. These type of donations make all the difference to what we can achieve for our learners, and allow us to continue our commitment to providing industry standard equipment and first rate experiences for our groups. Well done Jacob and James for completing this epic challenge!
If you would like to fundraise for Under the Stars and have a great idea, please feel free to contact Julia in our office who will support you as much as possible with your quest!
Fundraising Events
Thank you to Break a Leg and Chris Rust for choosing Under the Stars as their nominated charity for their October gig at Nether Edge Bowling Club last month. This event raised over £300 for Under the Stars. These funds will be used to buy an acoustic bass for our live ‘unplugged’ music sessions.
Project News
I'm Me Project
We are thrilled to be part of a new two year long research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council that will explore what artists with learning disabilities and/or autism think about:
Identity – how we perceive ourselves
Representation – how others perceive us
Voice – how we make our presence in the world known
The I'm Me project is a collaboration between Mind the Gap and York St. John University along with six other learning-disabled arts companies across the UK – About Face, Confidance, Lung-ha, Hijinx, Open Theatre and Under The Stars.
This project aims to put the adults with learning disabilities and/or autism at the centre of the research process and will use creative, artistic methods that are accessible as a way to engage people with learning disabilities and/or autism and to gather their insights, perceptions, and experiences.
This is a fantastic opportunity for UTS to give voice to our artists, to further build on our relationship with Mind The Gap and York St. John University and to establish relationships with the other the organisations who are involved.
None of this would be possible without YOU! Your donations, time, and support have been instrumental in enabling us to provide fantastic experiences for our participants in the past few months. We are truly grateful for your unwavering commitment to our cause.
Thank you for reading. If you'd like to speak to us about any of the content in our newsletter, we would love to hear from you.
