Folktales Reincarnated – A Trilogy of Short Films

Join us for a screening of three original short films created and performed by a talented cast of performers with learning disabilities and/or autism.

Inspired by folk tales from different cultures, these three original films explore fear, superstition, wisdom, and greed through folk horror, movement, shadow puppetry and storytelling. From a village gripped by paranoia to a community consumed by superstition and a trickster whose greed leads to isolation, each film offers a unique and atmospheric take on traditional tales.

This will be a relaxed screening, with dimmed lighting and a flexible approach to noise and movement. Audience members are welcome to come and go during the films if they need to. Please be aware that all films feature scenes which include a tense or unsettling atmosphere and may not be suitable for everyone.

The event will also include a short discussion and an opportunity to ask questions about the making of the films.

The Wiseman and The Cook

Set against a 1970s folk-horror backdrop, The Wiseman and The Cook follows a secluded village whose peaceful life is disrupted by illness, paranoia and growing suspicion. As fear spreads through the community, the film explores how wisdom, listening and restraint can help overcome hysteria.

Across The Loch

When an ancient stone is pulled from a remote loch, fear and superstition begin to take hold of the local community. Shot in black and white, Across The Loch uses shadow, atmosphere and ritual to explore how collective fear can grow — and how communities can become trapped by the stories they tell themselves.

Anansi The Spider

This striking black-and-white movement film reimagines West African folklore through shadow play, movement and ritual imagery. As the trickster Anansi spins his web of control, the film explores the dangers of greed, isolation and hoarding knowledge.
